Look into Nature
自然への注視
Soft rush furniture, created in Japan.
Something handed down across the ages.
The tradition of Japanese tatami mats is ancient; they appear even in the Kojiki, a chronicle dating from the 8th century.
Grasses have been grown and used continuously since the beginning, going back to ancient, perhaps even prehistoric times.
Tatami mats, originally used as portable seating in wooden-floored buildings, had by the end of the Heian Period (between the eighth and the 12th centuries) developed into a floor covering used throughout a room. By the Edo Period, specifically the Genroku Era of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, tatami had spread to the homes of ordinary citizens.
The relationship between Japan’s unique culture of seating and the rush plant is a tradition that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years.
There is no other country that has as old tradition and culture as Japan.
Our hope is to sublimate into modern sensibilities Japan’s natural beauty, the wisdom of our ancestors in co-existing with their natural surroundings, and the heart of Japan–all things out of which this intrinsic culture grew–and carry them into the future.
Our efforts began with that aspiration in mind.
What those of us at ADAL most wish to convey through this project is the importance of having respect for and learning from nature.
To do that, we must begin by becoming acquainted with and carefully observing nature.
We call this “Look into Nature.”
We have attempted to express that concept using the rush plant, a remarkable natural material.
Something handed down across the ages.
At ADAL, we are taking on the challenge of creating true value through interior products, while also emphasizing the importance of our vision, which encompasses:
- – The pursuit of essential beauty
- – The joy of creation
- – Respect for human nature and our natural environment
